Unique Layout Patterns
Over the past few years, there has been an increasingly popular trend to integrate more intricate design patterns into the flooring pattern itself. This new look allows homeowners to truly create a one-of-a-kind look for their favorite spaces. For homeowners that want their home to stand out from the crowd and make a visual statement, this can be a great option to consider. Here are a few popular patterns for your consideration:
- Herringbone - The Herringbone pattern is frequently seen in many different types of flooring surfaces from indoor to outdoor. This look is achieved by connecting two boards at a 90-degree angle to form a point. A floor with Herringbone accents creates a rich and elegant feel that can really enhance your home.
- Wide and Mixed Plank Widths - Traditionally, flooring installs were made up of all the same size width planks. Wide plank flooring has gained quite a bit of popularity recently, but narrow plank flooring still has its place in homes today. An interesting trend that is starting to gain momentum is mixing wide and narrow planks to build out a space. Mixed width plank floors can give a room a more natural and rustic feel.
Different Cut Wood Grains
The surface of wood flooring can have varying appearances depending on the way the wood is cut. There are 4 different styles of woodcuts. Each cut has a unique appearance and gives you additional style options to choose from. The different woodcuts include:
- Live Sawn - Wood that is cut from the outside diameter through the log without turning the log. This is the most efficient method of sawing lumber because it utilizes the entire log. Live Sawn is a popular option because it gives the wood a natural look with as much character as possible. This also creates a very distinct and desirable grain appearance.
- Rift Sawn - Process that aims to produce lumber that is less vulnerable to distortion than other types of sawn lumber. Wood that is cut neither parallel nor perpendicular to the growth rings make angles of 30 degrees to 60 degrees to the face of the board. Rift Sawn wood creates a straight-lined grain through and through.
- Quarter Sawn - Wood that is cut perpendicular to the growth rings so the rings are cut from 45-degree to 90-degree to the wide face of the board. Quarter Sawn wood is more stable from a dimensional standpoint than Plain Sawn lumber. This method creates a more unique, linear grain appearance.
- Plain Sawn - The most readily type of wood available. Milling is faster since each log is cut through the middle. Wood is cut parallel to the growth rings so that the rings are cut from 0-degree to 45-degree to the wide face board. This creates varied grain patterns and a unique cathedral appearance.
